DOWN MEMORY LANE

By Tina Pallas

First grade teacher Sherry Dillon is retiring this year after teaching 29 years at Campbell Elementary School, but she will continue to watch her students grow and will take fond memories of the students and staff with her.
Jimmy Froede and his uncle, Bill Froede, each bagged turkeys while hunting opening day on private land in Tuscola County. Jimmy's bird sported a 9 1/4" beard and tipped the scales at 22 1/4 lbs., while Bill's bird had a 10 1/2" beard and weighed 21 1/2 lbs.
Chuck and Amy Emmert presented the first Alison Lauren Emmert Memorial Scholarship to Matt Stoutenburg. Alison Emmert died in 2002 after battling cancer. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating Cass City senior based on academic performance, character, school and community involvement and student response questions.
Kayla Zaleski pitched the first no-hitter in her high school career in the nightcap against Dryden that was mercied after 5 innings with the Bulldogs leading 12-0.

Mother and daughter, Charleen and Pam Broyles, both received degrees during commencement exercises Saturday at Saginaw Valley State University. The pair celebrated their accomplishments, as well as Mother's Day, with family and friends over the weekend.
The 18th Annual Gavel Club Golf Tournament was won in record form Saturday at Rolling Hills Golf Course. Posting a 4-man scramble tally of 56 on the par 70 track were Dave Behrens, Bob Doerr, Dave Whittaker and Bill Wiebel.
The Hawks rode on the heels of 3-event winner Ryan Brinkman to finish third with 77 points in the Hatchet Invitational Saturday. Brinkman won the 100-meter in 11.62 and the 200-meter with a time of 23.42. His third win was in the 300-meter hurdles in 40.29.
Annette Bredemeyer, Cass City, struck mushroom gold last week in the area while searching for tasty morels. Bredemeyer said she was ready to give up when she discovered a patch of about 40 or so morels.

Having been a teacher for 40 years, 27 of them at Owendale and Owen-Gage, Mrs. Eva Rochefort, 59, has decided it's time to retire. Among Mrs. Rochefort's prized possessions are the annuals for every year she has taught at Owendale-Gagetown, starting in 1955-56.
More than $200, which will be used to buy food for needy families, was raised from an amateur talent show last Wednesday in Caro. The show at the Knights of Columbus Hall was sponsored by the emergency food program coordinated by Tuscola County Emergency Services Director James McCann. The show only drew about 50-60 spectators, according to John Ecken, one of the organizers. Thirteen acts performed. Named by the three judges as the best act were dancers Gretchen Schneider, Cori Hillman, and Judd Krause of the Caro and Cass City areas. Second place was Dan Bristol of Caro, who played guitars and sang. Third was the Wayne LaPratt family of Caro, who played musical instruments and sang.
In Thumb B Association track competition it's not a question of whether or not the Cass City girls will win. The question is, by how much? And usually the answer is by a big, big margin. The Hawks participated in three conference meets during the week. Tuesday, May 3, at Marlette the opponents were Bad Axe and Marlette. Cass City topped Bad Axe, 106-41, and Marlette bowed, 114-33. Thursday, May 5, the Hawks topped North Branch, 105 1/2 to 42 1/2. Against Bad Axe the girls swept all but three first places. Double winners for Cass City were Carrie Lautner in the mile and two-mile, Michelle Fahrner in the shot put and 880 and Tracy Green in the 100 and 220-yard dashes. Fahrner and Lautner were also double winners again North Branch.
Two teams of Cass City teachers competed in a tug of war after school May 3 in the high school gym. The winning team members were: Diana Williams, Karen Wallace, Betsy Dillon, Joe Guza, Wayne Dillon and Dave Hoard. The losers were Jerry Cleland, Russ Biefer, Dennis Meck, Cheryl LaBean, Jacquie Zawilinski and Rita Rysse. The winners received a trophy. Katie Jackson officiated.

Need your lawn mowed? Yard raked? Flowerbed worked up? Can't do it yourself? Then call on the students from the Ecology Class at Cass City High School. Each weekday morning between 10:30 and 11:30 five students will be on the job, working on yards and around homes of people who are elderly, ill or for some other reason cannot do the work themselves. The project idea began earlier this year in the class of 24, according to Nancy Auvil, instructor of the group. The service is free of charge.
Cornerstone opening ceremonies were held Sunday at the site of the old St. Pancratius Roman Catholic Church, Cass City, with 200 people in attendance. The old facility served parishioners for 70 years before it was torn down recently. The ceremony was conducted by president Bob Hirn who introduced families who have belonged to the parish for 50 years or more. They were Glenn McClorey, Myrtle Hennessey, John Kelly, Marian Turner, Marge Bliss, Fr. Leo Gengler, Loraine Donnelly, Marie Murray and John Garety. Among the items found when the copper box was opened were a picture of Pope Pius X., a note from the church committee, a Tri County Chronicle and a Detroit Free Press dated Sept. 23, 1903.
According to figures released by the Sanilac County Extension office, most students looking for summer jobs can expect to make between $1.60 and $2.00 an hour.
The Cass City Business and Professional Women's Club met Wednesday, May 2 at Veronica's Restaurant. The club awarded three Senior girls $100 scholarships. The three are Tamara Vatter, Zan Eubank and Cheryl Kozan. They have been accepted at various colleges.
