Students set for
 exercise party today

Campbell Elementary School students are eager to help Michigan retain its record as the state with the most participation in the world's largest exercise class.
Today (Wednesday) at 10 a.m., students from all 50 states and 50 countries will participate in ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously), a one-day youth exercise program designed to highlight the importance of and need for youth fitness.
Michigan schools have joined together in large numbers to role model their commitment to health. Last year, more than 1,000 schools and their nearly 450,000 students participated.
Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm and First Gentleman Daniel G. Mulhern are co-chairing ACES this year. "Dan and I have always stressed the importance of physical activity and sports in our lives and the lives of our children - we'd like to encourage all Michigan families to step up and get moving in 2008," Granholm said.
At Campbell Elementary School, students will celebrate ACES by meeting at the track, where students and staff will walk/jog together.
Elementary physical education teacher Betsy Dillon said the Cass City School District is committed to improving the health and fitness of each and every student. "ACES is a great opportunity to reinforce what the students have learned about physical fitness during the year, while having fun with our school family," Dillon added.
Michigan's efforts are coordinated by the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports, and sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance. Their sponsorship has allowed the council to provide free materials to plan the event and to distribute an educational newsletter and stickers for each of the 450,000 participants.
"We've made a long-term commitment to the health and well-being of Michigan residents," said Jim Robinson, executive vice president of Farm Bureau Insurance.
ACES was founded by New Jersey physical education instructor Len Saunders in 1989. Saunders wanted to encourage his students to be more physically active. Now in its 20th year, the program reaches millions worldwide. A number of national organizations support the effort, including the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, National Recreation and Parks Association, and the National Association for Health and Fitness.
