LeValley, Witherspoon and Varney award recipients

Cass City School officials last week formally recognized the latest recipients of the district's coveted Red Hawk Award of Excellence.
The Cass City Board of Education recognizes students during the months of October, December, February and April. Recipients are chosen by staff members in each building based on leadership, service, outstanding behavior, excellent academic performance, most improvement or other accomplishments in or outside of school.
School board members personally congratulate each winner and present them with maroon ribbons and certificates.
The April Red Hawk Award of Excellence winners includes fourth grade student Maegan LeValley, daughter of Richard and Paula LeValley.
"Maegan LeValley stands out among others. In all subjects, Maegan 'thinks deeper' and connects what is being learned to her world and the world around us," said teacher Yvonne Sherman. "Multiple times throughout the year, she has shared these connections, and at the same time has peppered our class discussion with intriguing questions to take us more thoroughly into a topic.
"Maegan challenges herself to do her best while appreciating the struggles of others. She is a willing partner when group work is assigned and encourages those around her to do their best," Sherman added.
"A sense of humor and a quick smile characterizes Maegan's personality and makes her an enjoyable student in the classroom. She can look at each situation presented and turn it into something fun."
Aubrei Witherspoon, a fifth grade student and daughter of Richard and Lynette Witherspoon, was named the middle school award winner.
"Aubrei is an outstanding student and person. She is every teacher's dream to have as a student," the staff wrote in its nomination letter. "Aubrei works very hard to turn in quality work. She works diligently and goes over and above what is expected. Because of her diligence, Aubrei has made numerous gains academically this year. She is conscientious about turning her work in on time. Neatness in her work is another excellent quality.
"Whether she is working independently or in a group, Aubrei can be counted on to be a good worker. She is willing to listen to others' ideas as well as contribute her own ideas for group projects," the staff wrote.
"Aubrei's behavior is excellent. She has a positive, smiling attitude all the time. (Her) quiet, winning personality makes her a pleasure to have in class (and) she exemplifies all of the pillars of character on a daily basis."

MAEGAN LEVALLEY, fourth grade (left), and Aubrei Witherspoon, fifth grade, are among the April Red Hawk Award of Excellence recipients honored by the Cass City Board of Education last week.

Finally, at the high school, the April recipient is Benjamin "Lukas" Varney, a junior and the son of Ben and Kathryn Varney.
"For 3 years I've had the privilege of having Lukas Varney as a student. In order to achieve the highest grades and my genuine respect, he has demonstrated outstanding character and maintained his sense of purpose," said teacher Linda Volz.
"Lukas is always a very respectful and courteous student. Not only is he polite towards me, but his peers and substitute teachers as well. He is able to work with any student in the classroom, so I always felt comfortable placing him into cooperative group learning activity," Volz added. "I could also count on Lukas to be trustworthy and honest. He has the courage to do the right thing even though it may not be the popular course of action. Lukas is secure in his values and doesn't have any problems adhering to them.
"It is my belief he will be successful in any endeavor he undertakes because of his solid work ethic and his integrity," Volz concluded.
