Winners in 10 of last 12
Red hot Red Hawks to be
tested in upcoming tilts
The streak of games against some of the better teams in the Thumb and in the Greater Thumb West conference continued this week for Cass city with games at USA Monday and at Bay City All Saints Thursday. Next Monday, May 12 at Freeland also promises to be a stern test.
The Hawk softball team won 4 of 6 games last week and 10 of their last 12. Unfortunately, the 2 losses were to GTW leaders Reese. Although disappointed by the defeats, coach Josh Stern still feels that his charges are able to play with the tough Rockets.
They have a fine team, he says, and we need to have one of our better games to post a win if we should play them again in the tournament. We didn’t play our best Thursday.
The story of the first game that Reese won 7-0 was the pitching of Abby Harrington. The Rockets opened the game with a pair of runs in the first inning on a walk, hit batter and a single by Danielle Kern.
Reese added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to go up, 4-0. The Hawks’ best chance to get back in the game came in the bottom of the inning. Heather Moore and McKensie Parrish opened with hits and there were runners on third and second with no one out. Harrington then struck out the next 3 hitters to end the threat. For the night, the Rocket ace struck out 14 while scattering 5 hits.
Reese salted away the game with 3 more runs in the sixth. Amanda Langenburg took the loss, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks.
In the nightcap, the Rockets broke open a tight game with 5 runs on 5 hits to win 7-0. Harrington allowed just 4 hits and 2 walks. Parrish was touched for 10 hits. Despite the final score, the game was close until the fifth. The Hawks trailed 2-0 going into the fatal fifth.
Lauren Dillon collected 2 of the Hawks’ 4 hits. Harrington had 2 hits for Reese.
SATURDAY TOURNAMENT
The Red Hawks brushed aside a pair of class B schools Saturday in a Caro tournament. Both games featured fine pitching by the Hawks and their opponents.
Cass City met Cros-Lex and Parrish hurled a neat 2-hit, one walk shutout as the Hawks’ 6 hits and a walk produced a 3-0 decision. Cass City scored in the first inning on a pair of walks and a single by Parrish.
The Hawks added another run in the fourth as Moore lashed a triple and scored a moment later.
An insurance run was racked up in the sixth as Lauren Bennett opened with a single, her second hit of the game, and came around on a hit by Megan
VanVliet.
The Hawks rolled to their second win of the day with a 3-1 decision over the Caro Tigers. Cass City scored twice in the third as Parrish walked and Dillon and VanVliet singled.
The Hawks’ final run of the game was racked up on a walk and errors. An opening single by Emily Koehler and a Hawk error in the last inning accounted for the Tigers’ only score in the game.
Carly Rabideau was the winning hurler, allowing 3 hits while walking a pair. Ellis took the loss.
BAD AXE TOPPLED
The Hawks had their hitting togs on against Bad Axe and mercied the Hatchets in both ends of the doubleheader played in Cass City.
In game one the Hatchets opened with a lead-off hit by Ashley
Bensinger, who scored on a Hawk error. That proved to be the only run for Bad Axe as Amanda Langenburg hurled a fine 4-hit, one walk game.
Trailing by a run, it didn’t take Cass City long to start a scoring parade. When it was over, Cass City had mercied the Hatchets with a 12-1 victory. The Hawks scored 2 in the first, 4 in the third, 2 in the fourth and ended it with 4 more runs in the fifth.
Cass City wrapped up 8 hits to go with 7 walks. Dillon and Maddie Dooley led the hit parade with 2 hits each.
The nightcap provided an easy win for Rabideau as her teammates wore out the path to the bases with a 17-1 decision. She allowed just 2 hits while walking 4. Eight players contributed hits led by Parrish with 4 hits in 4 trips and Rabideau with 3 hits in 4 tries.
Bennett, Parrish and Langenburg each scored 3 runs.
